MHTC to offer doubles leagues

posted Aug 9, 2020, 11:16 AM by Rose Paulgaard

July 14, 2020

MHTC is pleased to announce the club has approval from the City of Medicine Hat to operate doubles leagues. Please note, there are no league fees this year as players must provide their own balls. We ask that players continue to follow all public health measures.

Men's League (Wednesdays)
Dates: July 22 / July 29 / August 5 / August 12
Time: 6:30 p.m.
Courts: 1 - 3

A maximum of 12 spots are available.

Women's League (Thursdays in July & August)
Time: 6:30 p.m.
Courts: 6 & 7

New format! To offer greater flexibility to players interested in women's doubles, we've changed the structure of this league. Instead of a monthly commitment, weekly sign up sheets have been created and allow players to sign up based on their availability during July and August. There is room for 8 players each week and courts 6 and 7 will be reserved.

To register: A league sign up sheet is located in a binder on the table outside of the clubhouse.

Thank you for your continued cooperation within MHTC's evolving environment. We're pleased to announce the following changes to club operations which increase access to our facility.

NEW!
  • All courts (1-7) are now open.
  • Doubles and singles play are both permitted on all courts. Players do not need to reside in the same household.
  • No more than 30 people are permitted in the club compound (fenced club courts and adjacent hitting area) at one time and physical distancing (2m / 6ft) must be observed.
  • Match time limit is extended to 90 minutes if others are waiting. Please continue to sign up for a court or use the waiting list if courts are full.
  • Some club furniture has been made available for spectators. Use this at your own risk, or feel free to bring your own lawn chair.
REMINDERS! The following restrictions are still in place:
  • All players and spectators must sign in. A binder is available on a table outside of the clubhouse. This is an Alberta Health Services requirement for contact tracing purposes.
  • The clubhouse remains locked until further notice. There is no access to washroom or kitchen facilities. Please bring your own water and hand sanitizer.
  • There is no access to the ball machine or practice balls at this time.

COVID UPDATE #2

posted Jun 25, 2020, 8:57 PM by Rose Paulgaard   [ updated Jun 25, 2020, 8:58 PM ]

May 11, 2020

We hope this message finds our tennis families in good health and spirits despite the current circumstances.

While not the season we had envisioned, we are excited to share an update regarding MHTC operations. The City of Medicine Hat, with direction from the provincial government’s relaunch strategy, has permitted the club to open with some restrictions. It’s important that we as a tennis community demonstrate our commitment to protecting the health of ourselves and others by following the public health measures and city guidelines that have been put in place. A failure to do so may jeopardize our future access to the club.

Club Access & Guidelines for Use

Starting Wednesday, May 13, returning MHTC members can access club courts 1, 3, 6, and 7. Court 4 is already open as it is a City of Medicine Hat facility. Courts 2 and 5 remain closed until further notice. Members must abide by the following rules and restrictions if utilizing club facilities:

  1. Sign In. All players must sign in. A binder will be available on a table outside of the clubhouse. This is an Alberta Health Services requirement.

  2. Court Restrictions. Only singles play is allowed on club courts (1, 3, 6, 7) at this time and the use of two cans of balls is recommended. The one exception to this rule is if a doubles foursome resides at the same address (eg: family of four). If playing in a three or foursome with members of your immediate household, please try to keep to courts 1, 3, or 4 to reduce ball traffic. On court 4, the City of Medicine Hat “does not encourage play outside of your household at this time."

  3. Clubhouse Closed. The clubhouse remains locked until further notice. There is no access to washroom or kitchen facilities. Please bring your own water and hand sanitizer.

  4. Limited Access. No more than 15 people are permitted in the club compound (fenced club courts and adjacent hitting area) at one time and physical distancing must be observed. (2m / 6ft). Only players are allowed within the compound – spectators (friends, additional family members) are asked not to visit the club at this time.

  5. Match Limit. Due to the reduced number of courts, matches are limited to one hour if others are waiting. Please continue to sign up for a court, or use the waiting list if courts are full.

  6. Club Furniture/Equipment. Please do not use club furniture. Avoid touching surfaces where the virus could survive. Access to the ball machine and practice balls is not possible at this time.
There will be a bungee cord at the front gate to hold it open and minimize the need to re-enter the keypad code while courts are in use. If you are the last to leave, please ensure the gate is locked.

Club executive will be monitoring our courts to ensure these rules are followed. Court 4 will be monitored by city staff for compliance. Please help our club volunteers by respecting the rules outlined above.

Memberships

Given the limited access to club facilities, Medicine Hat Tennis Club is offering a reduction in membership fees for the 2020 season. The updated fees are listed below and the deadline for payment has been extended to June 15, 2020.

  • Single: $75
  • Couple: $125
  •  Senior/Student: $50
  • Junior (12 & under): Free

COVID UPDATE #1

posted May 11, 2020, 6:34 PM by Rose Paulgaard   [ updated Jun 25, 2020, 8:58 PM ]

March 27, 2020

Like all organizations, Medicine Hat Tennis Club operations are affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. We care about our tennis family and our community, and hope everyone is doing everything they can to help stop the spread of this virus. To support your efforts and to follow direction from the City of Medicine Hat, Medicine Hat Tennis Club facilities remain closed until further notice. Please note that courts 4 and 5 are also locked, as advised by the city.

At this time, we will be suspending the start of our 2020 tennis season and all related lessons, leagues and events. If you have already paid for lessons or membership fees, we ask for your patience as we continue to monitor the situation and make decisions about rescheduling programming and issuing reimbursements.

If we are able to launch the season at a later date, we will prorate membership fees and consider alternate lesson options for juniors and adults.

Please watch our website and your email for updates regarding club operations. If you have any questions, please email us at info@medicinehattennisclub.com.

Stay healthy everyone!

Tennis club prepares to play host for two provincial tournaments

June 11, 2019  l  Medicine Hat, Alberta

The start of summer promises to be an exciting time at Medicine Hat Tennis Club with big events on its calendar, including two provincial tournaments.

The Barrie Shave Tennis Classic returns for its 21st year from June 12 - 16 with one of the largest draws in the tournament’s history. With nearly 50 men’s and women’s teams registered for the competition, matches will get underway at the tennis club on Wednesday evening this week. In addition to five days of men’s and women’s doubles action, this tournament also serves as a fundraiser in memory of Barrie Shave, a tennis player and community volunteer who died in 1999 after a battle with pancreatic cancer. This event continues to give friends an opportunity to remember his many contributions for the betterment of the community and has raised over $125,000 to date for cancer research and junior tennis initiatives.

In addition to the annual club tournament schedule, MHTC is proud to play host to the Alberta Outdoor Junior Open from June 20 - 23 and the tennis events for the Alberta 55+ Games from July 4-7.

“This is an incredible opportunity to welcome the province to our club. Members of the Tennis Alberta organization have visited our facility in the past and were impressed by what they saw here,” says Ken Clement, MHTC’s general manager. “We were honoured to be asked to host this event, and look forward to watching top talent from across the province right here at home.”

Any junior players with their eye on competing at the national level will have to compete in this Tennis Alberta tour event, but the tournament has also opened up to local junior players looking for a new challenge. To date, four Medicine Hat Tennis Club juniors will take to the courts at this event.

The Alberta 55+ Games will follow just two weeks later with local doubles teams ready to compete. Sheila Reinheller and Wai Cheng Pretzlaw will represent the south zone 1 in women’s doubles and Craig Weich and Dave Reinheller will play on the men’s side. Two additional club members, Mark Thorogood and Kerry McDowell, will have the opportunity to play for Zone 2, which had no team representation for the tennis event.
